A powerful cinematic retelling of India’s most influential social reformers is all set to hit the silver screen. ‘Phule’, a Hindi biopic that chronicles the remarkable journey of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, will release across India and worldwide on April 25, 2025. Presented by Zee Studios in association with Dancing Shiva Films and Kingsmen Productions, this film promises not just to entertain but to educate, inspire, and ignite crucial conversations around equality and justice.

At its core, ‘Phule’ is a deep dive into the lives and relentless efforts of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule—pioneers of social reform, champions of women’s education, and fierce opponents of caste-based discrimination. The film captures their unwavering commitment to challenging the regressive norms of 19th-century India and establishing a foundation for social equality.
Their journey is not merely historical—it’s a blueprint for social revolution. At a time when casteism and patriarchy were deeply entrenched, the Phules dared to think differently, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive society. The film brings this transformative narrative to life in a way that’s relevant to today’s generation.
Helmed by National Award-winning director Ananth Mahadevan, ‘Phule’ boasts a talented lineup both in front of and behind the camera. The lead roles are portrayed by Pratik Gandhi—widely acclaimed for his role in Scam 1992—as Jyotiba Phule, and the versatile Patralekha as Savitribai Phule. From the film’s trailer, it’s evident that their performances add emotional weight and authenticity to these iconic characters.
The film’s production is backed by an impressive team of producers including Pranay Chokshi, Jagdish Patel, Ritesh Kudecha, Anuya Chauhan Kudecha, Sunil Jain, and Dr. Raj Khaware. Co-producers Kranti Shanbhag, Kalapi Nagda, Rohan Godambe, and Paridhi Khandelwal have also played a crucial role in bringing this ambitious project to life.
One of the strongest aspects of ‘Phule’ is its commitment to historical authenticity through world-class production values. Acclaimed cinematographer Sunita Radia captures the visual language of colonial India with finesse, while Aparna Shah’s costume design carefully reconstructs the clothing styles of the 1800s, providing an immersive experience of that era.
Santosh Futane‘s production design meticulously recreates the physical environment of British-era Maharashtra, and Rashi Butte, who handled sync sound, ensures the dialogues and ambient sounds feel rooted and real. Santosh Gayke, through makeup and hair design, adds to the characters’ realism.
The soul of any historical drama lies in its soundscape, and ‘Phule’ delivers just that. Music director duo Rohan-Rohan have crafted a soundtrack that beautifully complements the film’s emotional and philosophical depth. Whether it’s the stirring background score or the poignant lyrics, the music elevates the narrative at every turn.
Raunak Phadnis, the film’s editor, has ensured a crisp and engaging storytelling pace, while Kunal Shrikrishna Tarkar‘s work in post-production ensures that every frame resonates with the audience.
‘Phule’ isn’t just a period film—it’s a cultural document, a movement in motion, and a mirror to society. By shedding light on the lives of two of India’s most progressive thinkers, the film invites the audience to reflect on how far we’ve come—and how far we still have to go.
It arrives at a time when conversations about gender, caste, and social justice are more relevant than ever. As educational and political discourses revisit the legacies of forgotten heroes, ‘Phule’ brings their ideas vividly back into the public consciousness.
As the release date approaches, the anticipation around ‘Phule’ continues to build. It’s more than just a film—it’s a powerful cinematic experience that combines history, emotion, and activism. Whether you’re a student of history, a social thinker, or simply a lover of impactful cinema, ‘Phule’ is one film that you don’t want to miss.
