Industry & Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant Announces Initiative at University’s 9th Convocation Ceremony

Pune: In a landmark move to promote Maharashtra’s cultural and linguistic heritage, Ajinkya D.Y. Patil University has announced the launch of a Marathi language learning course for non-resident Indians (NRIs). The initiative was unveiled by Maharashtra’s Industry and Marathi Language Minister, Uday Samant, at the university’s 9th convocation ceremony.

Promoting Marathi Language Among NRIs

Addressing the convocation, Samant emphasized the need for such educational initiatives, especially for Maharashtrian families living abroad who struggle to teach their children Marathi. He shared an anecdote from the Vishva Sahitya Sammelan in Pune, where NRIs expressed concerns over their children’s inability to speak their mother tongue despite receiving high-quality education in foreign institutions.

Recognizing the importance of preserving Maharashtra’s linguistic identity, Samant personally requested University President Dr. Ajinkya D.Y. Patil to develop a comprehensive curriculum tailored for NRIs. “Dr. Patil has shown keen interest in making this initiative a reality, and I am confident that this course will bridge the language gap for Marathi families abroad,” he said.

9th Convocation Ceremony: Honoring Excellence

The convocation ceremony was graced by distinguished personalities, including University President Dr. Ajinkya D.Y. Patil and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rakesh Kumar Jain. Honorary doctorates (D.Litt) were conferred upon individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields:

  • Prof. (Dr.) Nishakant Ojha – Cybersecurity, Space Security, National Defense, and International Political Strategy
  • Dr. Rachna Buxani-Mirpuri – Mental Health and Education
  • Maharaj Kumar Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh – Cultural Heritage Conservation, Social Welfare, and Education
  • Amit Dhamani – Global Jewelry Trade
  • Nawab Shaji Ul Mulk – Founder of T10 Cricket League and Promoter of Sustainable Architecture

Over 1,000 students across multiple disciplines, including Engineering, Design, Film & Media, Law, Liberal Arts, Hospitality Management, and Architecture, were awarded degrees, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.

Minister Samant’s Vision for Maharashtra’s Development

Samant also highlighted his achievements as an Industry Minister, noting his successful efforts in securing investment agreements worth ₹15.7 lakh crore at the Davos summit. “This is a historic achievement that will generate numerous employment opportunities for students in Maharashtra,” he said, urging graduates to uphold Maharashtra’s rich cultural and traditional values while excelling in their respective fields.

Reflecting on his tenure as Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister during the COVID-19 pandemic, Samant recalled the difficult decision to cancel university exams. “When I consulted students, 90% were against conducting exams. Holding exams for 60 lakh students, teachers, and staff would have been a massive health risk. After extensive discussions, we decided to cancel them. Many students saw me as their savior, and I became known as the minister who protected them during the pandemic,” he said.

An Emotional Moment for Uday Samant

A particularly touching moment during the ceremony was when Samant received an honorary doctorate from Ajinkya D.Y. Patil University. Expressing his gratitude, he said, “My parents always wanted me to become a doctor. From today, my name will carry the title ‘Dr.’ This recognition of my political and social contributions by Dr. Patil is an honor I will cherish forever.”

ADYPU’s Commitment to Innovation and Growth

Dr. Ajinkya D.Y. Patil underscored the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancements. “To stay ahead, students must think innovatively and develop diverse skills. ADYPU is fast emerging as a hub of innovation, and we encourage lifelong learning,” he stated.

In a major development, he announced the construction of a 600-bed hospital within the university campus and the launch of a medical college. “My father, Dr. D.Y. Patil, pioneered private educational institutions in Maharashtra, ensuring affordable education for the underprivileged. We are committed to carrying forward his vision,” he added.

Establishing a Marathi Language Center

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rakesh Kumar Jain concluded the event by announcing the establishment of a Marathi Language Center at the university. This center aims to promote and preserve Marathi, ensuring that the next generation stays connected to its linguistic roots.
