Pune, June 4:
“People who perform rituals but lack faith in themselves are the real non-believers, while those who may not follow any rituals but possess unwavering confidence in themselves are the true believers,” said renowned actor Sachin Pilgaonkar during the launch of the book ‘Akki’, based on the life of photographer Akshay Paranjape.
The book, penned by Akshay’s father Santosh Paranjape, narrates the determined and inspiring journey of a young man who defied all odds while battling Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder. The book was officially launched at a special function in Pune, attended by prominent figures from various walks of life.

The event saw the presence of Member of Parliament Medha Kulkarni, lyricist Vaibhav Joshi, Meghraj Raje Bhosale, chairman of the Maharashtra Film Development Corporation, entrepreneur Ajit Gadgil, Amol Rawatekar, Seema Deshmukh, Shrirang Deshmukh, actor Girish Kulkarni, Atharva Sudame, Indranil Kamat, Atharva Karve, author Santosh Paranjape, and of course, the subject of the book – Akshay Paranjape himself.
Pilgaonkar, reflecting on the book and Akshay’s story, stated, “Every person has inner confidence, but sometimes it gets buried under the dust of doubt. That dust needs to be shaken off – sometimes with help from others, and sometimes by ourselves. Akshay’s life journey serves as an inspiration for those moments.”
Referring to the film industry, Pilgaonkar noted how many aspiring artists often become disheartened over minor failures. “This book is a beacon of hope and should find its way into the hearts of those in cinema and beyond,” he emphasized.
He also shared a heartfelt sher (couplet) that occurred to him after meeting Akshay:
“Dukaan jal gayi hai, bharosa nahi jala,
Kal aakar dekho, dukaan khuli milegi.”
(“The shop may have burned down, but not my faith. Come back tomorrow, and you’ll see it open again.”)
Speaking at the event, MP Medha Kulkarni remarked that ‘Akki’ is not just the story of one individual’s determination, but also a tribute to a supportive and resilient family. “It reflects the beauty of compassion, love, determination, gratitude, devotion, and faith. Among all human strengths, it is faith that empowers us the most,” she said. She also urged everyone to discover their life’s purpose and move toward it with intent and courage.
A special segment of the program featured a live reading from Akki, performed by actress and writer Neha Shitole and Akanksha Paranjape. The audience was visibly moved by the emotional depth and realism of the narration, capturing the essence of Akshay’s battle and triumph.
The entire event was gracefully anchored by Milind Kulkarni, who kept the audience engaged throughout the evening.
Akshay Paranjape has carved a name for himself as a talented photographer, despite the serious health condition he has faced since his teenage years. Akki details not just his challenges, but the perseverance, hope, and family support that helped him rise above them. It is an ode to resilience and a reminder that strength often comes not from physical ability, but from belief, spirit, and purpose.
