Skill Development Plays Crucial Role in Rehabilitation of Addicts: Mukta Avachat-Puntambekar

Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning celebrates Silver Jubilee with a focus on inclusive skill education

Pune, May 9, 2025 – “Skill training can play a transformative role in the rehabilitation of individuals struggling with addiction. With proper guidance and skill development, even those recovering from substance abuse can lead fulfilling and productive lives,” said Mukta Avachat-Puntambekar, Director of Muktangan De-addiction Centre. She was addressing the gathering as the chief guest at the joint celebration of Symbiosis Open Education Society’s 18th Foundation Day, Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning’s (SCDL) Silver Jubilee, and the 9th Foundation Day of Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, held at the university auditorium in Kiwale.

The event was presided over by Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, President of Symbiosis Open Education Society, while Dr. Swati Mujumdar, Principal Director of the Society, was also present on the dais.

Empowering Lives Through Skill Training

Speaking at the event, Avachat-Puntambekar highlighted the impact SCDL has made over the years. “By offering industry-relevant skill training, SCDL has significantly improved the lives of thousands of youths. This training not only boosts their economic standing but also gives them hope and purpose,” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of providing focused attention and vocational training to recovering addicts, suggesting that their reintegration into society largely depends on opportunities like these.

25 Years of SCDL: A Legacy of Accessible Learning

Marking a major milestone, dignitaries unveiled the Silver Jubilee logo of SCDL. Dr. Swati Mujumdar used the occasion to shed light on the organization’s mission. “We are committed to reaching underserved communities by providing skill development aligned with market demand,” she said. “Online learning plays a pivotal role in bridging the education gap in remote areas.”

She further announced a forward-looking vision for the institution. “SCDL currently offers certificate and diploma programs, but we aim to transform it into an Open University in the next two years, offering degree programs to our learners. The future lies in ‘Education on Demand’, where skill development is seamlessly integrated with academic learning.”

Visionary Leadership and Community Support

Dr. S. B. Mujumdar reflected on the journey of SCDL, attributing its success to the dedicated staff and strong community support. “Reaching 2 lakh students is no small feat. Our story is one of persistence, evolution, and visionary leadership,” he remarked. He also paid a heartfelt tribute to late Dr. Anil Avachat, acknowledging his role in shaping the philosophy of holistic education and rehabilitation.
