Pune, May 20, 2025:
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has expressed profound grief over the passing of Dr. Jayant Narlikar, a world-renowned astrophysicist and an iconic figure in the realm of science and rational thinking. In a heartfelt message, Pawar paid tribute to the immense contributions of Dr. Narlikar to the fields of astrophysics, science communication, and the promotion of scientific temper among the Indian populace.

“Dr. Jayant Narlikar took Indian science to new heights on the global stage. He was not only a brilliant scientist but also a visionary educator and communicator who dedicated his life to making science accessible and exciting, especially for young minds,” said Pawar.

He highlighted how Dr. Narlikar’s pioneering research in cosmology, particularly the Quasi-Steady State Theory (QSS) developed in collaboration with Sir Fred Hoyle, challenged conventional scientific ideas and earned him admiration across the international scientific community. His contributions to understanding the origin, structure, and evolution of the universe placed him in the league of the most respected astrophysicists worldwide.

The Deputy Chief Minister also praised Dr. Narlikar’s institution-building efforts, especially the founding of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, which has grown to become a premier research institute and a hub for astronomy education and outreach in India.

Beyond his academic and research accomplishments, Dr. Narlikar was also a passionate science communicator. Through his books, articles, and lectures—in both English and Marathi—he sparked curiosity and critical thinking in countless young minds. His ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and engaging manner made him beloved among students, teachers, and science enthusiasts.

Ajit Pawar also recalled Dr. Narlikar’s impactful address at the All India Marathi Literary Conference, where he forcefully advocated for scientific reasoning and strongly opposed superstition and blind faith. “His words were not only insightful but courageous and necessary in a time when scientific thinking is often challenged,” he said.

“His demise marks the end of an era,” Pawar added. “The best way we can honor Dr. Narlikar’s memory is by continuing his mission—promoting science education, encouraging curiosity, and nurturing a scientific temper among our youth.”

Dr. Narlikar was a recipient of several prestigious awards including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Maharashtra Bhushan. His passing is not only a great loss to India but to the global scientific fraternity.

“May his legacy inspire future generations of scientists, educators, and rational thinkers. Let us commit ourselves to carrying forward the torch he lit,” concluded Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.
