Dagdusheth Ganpati Idol Adorned with 5,000 Tender Coconuts During Grand Festival

Pune | May 11, 2025 – In a uniquely divine celebration, the revered idol of Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati was adorned with 5,000 tender coconuts (shahale) as part of a special Shahale Mahotsav organized jointly by the Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Trust and the Suvarnayug Tarun Mandal. The festival was held on the auspicious occasion of Vaishakh Shuddha Pournima, a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar.

Pushtipati Vinayak Avatar Worshipped on Vaishakh Pournima

According to scriptures, Vaishakh Pournima marks the divine appearance of Pushtipati Vinayak, one of the lesser-known but significant incarnations of Lord Ganesha. This avatar is believed to have descended to slay the demon Durmati, who was wreaking havoc across the three worlds – Earth (Prithvi), Netherworld (Paatal), and Heaven (Swarga).

In line with this sacred mythology, a special Ganesh Yagya, Abhishek, and Pushtipati Vinayak Jayanti Puja were performed at the temple during sunrise. These rituals are said to bring protection from natural calamities like forest fires, droughts, and water scarcity—issues that deeply affect rural and agrarian communities in India.

Coconuts as Maha-Naivedya: A Prayer for a Healthy, Prosperous Nation

As a symbolic offering and prayer for the well-being of the nation, 5,000 tender coconuts were offered as Maha-Naivedya to Lord Ganesha. Devotees and trustees prayed for relief from drought, water crises, and farmers’ hardships, invoking the deity’s blessings for a healthy, prosperous India.

“The coconut represents purity, coolness, and nourishment. Offering it in such numbers is both a spiritual act and a call for balance in nature,” said a trustee from the temple.

Stunning Decorations and Musical Devotion

The inner sanctum (garbhagraha) and assembly hall (sabhamandap) of the temple were beautifully decorated with green coconuts and tree saplings, creating a serene and divine atmosphere. The early morning hours saw a melodious devotional concert by noted singer Sania Patankar and her team, who offered their art at the feet of Lord Ganpati.

Scriptural Roots in the Ganesh and Mudgal Puranas

The concept of Pushtipati Vinayak avatar is mentioned in sacred Hindu texts like the Ganesh Purana and Mudgal Purana. As per the mythology, Pushti, the daughter of Lord Vishnu, was born to bring nourishment and well-being to the world. Lord Ganesha, born to Shiva and Parvati in this avatar, takes on the task of eliminating the evil Durmati and restoring balance.

A Tradition of Faith and Service

The celebration of Pushtipati Vinayak Jayanti and the Shahale Mahotsav is now an annual tradition at the Dagdusheth Ganpati temple. “Every year on this day, we offer coconuts in large numbers with the intention of praying for the nation’s welfare,” said one of the organizers. “This is our way of invoking divine protection from the scorching heat of Vaishakh and the crises it brings.”

Sharing the Prasad with the Needy

In a heartwarming gesture, the next day after the festival, the tender coconuts offered to the deity will be distributed to patients at Sassoon Hospital in Pune. This act symbolizes the extension of divine blessings to those in need and reinforces the temple’s commitment to social welfare.
